The availability of research data alongside journal articles is slowly but surely becoming a common practice in scientific communication. The European Commission and other financiers of scientific research have set high expectations for scientists in the direction of greater openness and availability of all forms of scientific work and results. However, due to their important role in scientific communication, scientific journals are the main point of realizing open science in practice.
Croatian journals are often highlighted as a successful example of the implementation of open access to scientific articles. It is particularly valuable that most of Croatian open access journals have chosen the diamond path, not charging fees to authors and readers, which is recognized within the EU as the best way to ensure equality, diversity, inclusiveness and multilingualism. Harmonization of journal quality standards at the European level, achieving greater credibility of published works and transparency of the entire research process is the next step, where the availability of research data on the basis of published results plays a vital role.
As this segment of open science is still insufficiently considered in Croatia, the organizers of the webinar “The Role of Journals in Encouraging Access to Research Data” decided to organize it to encourage a conversation about the importance of access to research data, present the requirements of financiers of scientific research and present existing guidelines for implementation editorial policies on the availability of research data and available infrastructure for data storage and access and addressed the main challenges that editors and authors may face.
Aspira College participated in this webinar, which took place on July 5, 2022, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.
